We learn that Rufus became a Shaker as a boy and was appointed Elder in 1808 (at age 33). Stephen Paterwic's biographical sketch of Elder Bishop provides a strong overview of Bishop's life and context within Shakerism. The varied content makes for an atypical review, as the combination of works are usually not in one monograph. ![]() The significant work is not easy to classify, as it contains many types of material, including: transcriptions of original journals kept by Bishop, Shaker authored manuscripts involving Bishop (notably, a Western Tour travel journal), a scholarly biography of Bishop, extensive notations by Shaker scholars concerning original journal content, and a comprehensive biographical appendix with details on the Shakers mentioned in the main text. Originating from the genealogical interests of the editor (Elder Bishop was Van Demark's 4th great uncle), this set evolved into a noteworthy scholarly contribution.
